MUSIC

WALK THE LINE
Artist: Joaquin Phoenix & Reese Witherspoon
Rating: 3/5   Technical: 2005, 1 disc
Details: Obviously this does not touch on the brilliance of the original performances by Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash, but both actors do a pretty good job. Joaquin Phoenix is particularly affecting, delivering a gravel-voiced version of Cry, Cry, Cry that is a real thrill to Cash fans and newcomers alike.
Available: Amazon.com / Amazon.co.uk

HOTEL RWANDA
Artist: Various
Rating: 4/5   Technical: 2002, 1 disc
Details: A real mix of styles, this soundtrack features contributions from both African and Western artists, including Afro Celt Sound System, Bernard Kabanda, and even Wyclef Jean. There are also solid sections of score that help to mould the album into a beautiful, haunting reminder of the film.
Available: Amazon.com / Amazon.co.uk

THE VILLAGE
Artist: James Newton Howard
Rating: 4/5   Technical: 2004, 1 disc
Details: A beautiful soundtrack full of themes of love, hope, sorrow and fear that engage your emotions at the outset. This music compliments the movie wonderfully but also stands as powerful work on its own. Highly recommended.
Available: Amazon.com / Amazon.co.uk

LADDER 49
Artist: Various Artists
Rating: 5/5   Technical: 2004, 1 disc
Details: The nature of the film has inspired a song-based soundtrack that evokes introspection and differences of generation and ethnicity, all of it grounded in a rock solid working class ethos. Of special note is Robbie Robertson's beautifully emotional ballad Shine Your Light.
Available: Amazon.com / Amazon.co.uk

BROTHER BEAR
Artist: Various Artists
Rating: 4/5   Technical: 2003, 1 disc
Details: Not much score but the songs are a great mix of the emotional and spirited songs you expect from a Disney movie. Including an excellent guest vocal from Tina Turner on Great Spirits.
Available: Amazon.com / Amazon.co.uk

SIGNS
Artist: James Newton Howard
Rating: 4/5   Technical: 2002, 1 disc
Details: Eerie and atmospheric, with a first half of unsettling intensity, this collection still has room for evocative, emotive content. Currently being compared to some of the classic film scores, the Signs soundtrack showcases a master talent.
Available: Amazon.com / Amazon.co.uk

QUILLS
Artist: Stephen Warbeck
Rating: 4/5   Technical: 2002, 1 disc
Details: A classical collection of moody, haunting and mysterious pieces from the original score. It is very well done, but be warned: if you're looking for Mary Poppins style tracks, steer clear. This is Quills at its broody best.
Available: Amazon.com / Amazon.co.uk

GLADIATOR: MORE MUSIC FROM THE MOTION PICTURE
Artist: Hans Zimmer & Lisa Gerrard
Rating: 4/5   Technical: 2001, 1 disc
Details: A handful of tracks that were strangely absent from the first CD form the strong foundation for this second compilation. However, a couple experimental cuts & a terrible disco mix lessen the overall effect.
Available: Amazon.com / Amazon.co.uk

THE YARDS
Artist: Howard Shore
Rating: 4/5   Technical: 2000, 1 disc
Details: A wholly orchestral score, this is moody and dark; an atmospheric collection that will stand on its own quite well.
Available: Amazon.com / Amazon.co.uk

GLADIATOR
Artist: Hans Zimmer & Lisa Gerrard
Rating: 5/5   Technical: 2001, 1 disc
Details: Passionate, epic & sweeping pieces from Zimmer call to mind the ferocious battle scenes, while Gerrard handles the haunting, exotic melodies such as Sorrow and Elysium. Powerful, evocative stuff.
Available: Amazon.com / Amazon.co.uk

8MM
Artist: Mychael Danna
Rating: 4/5   Technical: 1999, 1 disc
Details: Mostly comprised of haunting music taken straight from the movie, with a couple of bhangra tracks thrown in.
Available: Amazon.com / Amazon.co.uk

CLAY PIGEONS
Artist: Various
Rating: 4½/5   Technical: 1998, 1 disc
