GLADIATOR (2000)

Director: Ridley Scott
Screenplay: David H. Franzoni
Runtime: 154mins approx
Country: UK/USA
Rating: R (USA); 15 (UK); M (Aus)
Synopsis: When ailing Emperor Marcus Aurelius chooses the heroic general Maximus to be his heir instead of
his oily son Commodus, things take a deadly twist. First doing away with his father before his announcement can be made
public, Commodus orders the death of Maximus. Managing to escape, Maximus returns home too late, finding his family
massacred and his land burned. Sold into slavery, the former general's only chance is to become a gladiator under the
tutelage of money-hungry Proximo. When the Gladiatorial Games take Proximo's band of merry men to Rome, Maximus has the
chance to face the man who killed everyone he cared for, clawing his way up through bloody death-matches until he wins
the heart of the people. Gladiator, released to huge box office receipts, features uniformly excellent performances.
Crowe's Maximus is a powerhouse of rage, strength and glory, and Joaquin simply chews up the scenery as the love-starved
Emperor Commodus, uncovering the heart of what could have been a simple 2-dimensional bad guy. Equally impressive are
the performances of Nielson, Harris and, especially, Oliver Reed, providing in Proximo a piece of accomplished work well
worth being remembered by.
